Months and years later, this can still make sense
A delayed reaction is common. It is not proof that you are going backwards.
A lot of support is written for the first week. Many people only start to feel the impact later: when a case ends, when a relationship gets close, when a child reaches the age they were, when life finally gets quiet enough.
You can still be affected if you “got on with it”. Functioning and struggling often happen in the same month. Nightmares, a short fuse, shutting down during sex or closeness, scanning rooms, forgetting what people just said, or feeling nothing at all — these are nervous system patterns, not a character flaw.
You do not owe anyone the story
Counselling, a SARC, a GP, and the police are different doors. You can use one without the others. You can want help with sleep and never want to describe what happened.
If you were harmed years ago, including as a child, specialist services still take that seriously. NAPAC supports adults who were abused in childhood. Rape Crisis and Survivors Trust services work with historic cases every day.
What helps is usually smaller than you think
Not a new personality. A few reliable ways back into the present, one person who does not need the details, and a professional who knows sexual violence if you want one. Resurgence’s settling tools are for the first part. The guide is for the rest.
